Other Facts About Nerkuppai

The name is believed to have originated from stories passed down by our grandparents. Long ago, this area was known for its abundant grain production, and the primary waste-called “kuppai”-came from rice husks (nel). While the true origin of the name remains uncertain, this is the explanation handed down through generations.

The renowned Nerkuppai Kattalai Kavadi, celebrated by the Nagarathar community, is dedicated annually to Pazhani Murugan. This sacred tradition boasts a history spanning over 400 years of devoted worship to Lord Murugan, along with the generous practice of Annadhanam (free food offerings) at Pazhani.
